House of Finn Juhl Presents “Hanne’s Bedroom”
House of Finn Juhl presents the relaunch of Hanne’s Bedroom – one of the most personal and unconventional projects in Finn Juhl’s career. Originally shown at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1961, the colorful bedroom ensemble was created for Hanne Wilhelm Hansen, Finn Juhl’s life partner. Comprising a bed, two chairs and a small table, and the already relaunched Glove Cabinet, the ensemble marked a striking departure from the refined wooden furniture that had made Finn Juhl internationally renowned. Instead, he embraced bold colors, steel construction, and a more graphic, experimental design language.
More than a collection of furniture, Hanne’s Bedroom was intended as a complete interior. Designed specifically for Hanne Wilhelm Hansen, it reflected both Finn Juhl’s desire to explore new creative territory and a deeply personal tribute to the woman who shared his life and work. Original drawings reveal vibrant combinations of red and turquoise, while the upholstery was intended to be executed in Thai silk.
When the bedroom was unveiled in 1961, reactions were divided. Some praised its playful use of color and willingness to challenge convention, while others struggled to accept its departure from the ideals of Danish Modern. The cylindrical backrest of the chair even inspired a cartoon in which it was transformed into a lottery drum – or “tombola”.
Seen today, Hanne’s Bedroom stands as a testament to Finn Juhl’s refusal to repeat himself. Rather than revisiting the forms that had made him famous, he chose to experiment with new materials, colors, and ways of living. The relaunch brings renewed attention to a remarkable and often overlooked chapter of his oeuvre – one that reveals both his creative courage and the personal story behind some of his most unexpected designs.
